CEPL: Trinationales Projekt

Connecting – Editing – Programming – Learning: Sowing the Seeds for Joint Teaching and Research in Digital Papyrology, Philology and Ancient History in the European Campus is a research and teaching consortium aiming to develop joint research opportunities, to collaborate in the teaching of papyrological, historical, and coding skills; and to explore the possibilities of establishing a tri-national teaching program in the historical study of ancient papyri.

It will concentrate the complementary expertise of Strasbourg (papyrology), Basel (papyrology/history of Late Roman Egypt/digital humanities) and Freiburg (history of Greco-Roman Egypt/digital humanities), as well as the new e-editorial opportunities for papyrologists created by the platform organa papyrologica hosted by the University Library of Leipzig.

Building on the joint humanist manuscript reading tradition of the Upper Rhine Valley, the project aims to introduce regular Bachelor and Masters students of History, Ancient History and Classics to manuscript work by pooling their diverse interests and skills in the process of reading, editing and electronically publishing original papyri in the collections of Freiburg, Basel and Strasbourg. On the basis of this practical experience, the consortium aims to establish joint cross-University courses and a truly tri-national identity in the teaching of reading ancient manuscripts.
